New Canary - He's not looking well - hoarse voice (help!)

Post by FinchFlurry » Mon May 09, 2016 7:56 pm

My grandmother got herself a red factor canary the other day, I went to go see him.
I knew he wasn't well the moment I saw him, my grandma is not familiar with this stuff.

He's all puffed up and making clicking sounds. His breathing sounds raspy... He's breathing hard.
She got him at a petsmart (sigh....), must've been already sick in there because I saw him on the same day.
I took him out of the cage to look at him up close, noticed some feathers stuck dry over his nostrils, looks like there may have been some clear nasal discharge?

So I took him home with me to take care of him.

Now, I used to breed green singer finches but I've never had one get sick. So I'm a bit inexperienced in these matters. I'm assuming it could be air sac mites or respiratory infection? Not sure. We don't have any avian vets around here.

I set up a heat lamp for him, he's perched next to it right now. Put a towel around the cage to keep out any drafts. Haven't really heard a peep from him later today. He tried chirping this morning and it sounded awful, poor guy.

I'm replacing his water twice a day and he's taken a bath. He eats lots. I even stuck an apple wedge between the bars and he's nibbling at it now and then.

What do you guys think?
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

FinchFlurry I'm not a canary expert, but he does look very lethargic and droopy. With the clicking sounds I agree it could be ASM or an infection. We have many members who have canaries so I hope they chime in soon. Good luck.

Even knowing whether it's ASM or an infection I'm stumped on how to go about treating it :(

Still clicking today, but he's quite active. Ate a whole slice of apple.
