Waterlogged
Sorry for the ongoing posts regarding my new canary but as I observe her each day I am beginning to understand better hopefully what is going on.
When she bathes she gets Waterlogged.
The more she gets water on her feathers they clump and stick together and you can see the skin as if she were totally soaked.
But this is the same bath level that the society and zebra splash and soak in and this Doesn't happen to them. Their feathers don't get clumpy and stick together. The bath water at about 1/2 gets Sweetie partly clumpy and hard to fly. Can't have it at 1" or she can't fly at all and can barely balance on a perch.
I tried looking online but only found if birds fall in a tub or like in oil spills.
What can cause this in a normal bird?
Can it be helped/cured?
Can she grow out of it, could she be too young?
Anything that could help her feathers not retain water so easily?
Thank you for your patience with my questions.

Re: Waterlogged
I can understand where she would'nt be able to fly sometimes my finches get too wet and go right to the perch at the bottom but they flap there wings for a few seconds and up they go flapping and drying off.my mama finch sometimes climbs up the barsmall to the top perch by the sun or light to dry off.may-be when she is use to the cage a little better she won't panick to fly and will give herself a chance to dry off, just a thought.

Re: Waterlogged
Barbara - thank you
Sounds like that could be all she needs is time and getting used to.
I don't know her age nor anything about her accommodations in the past.
She just does weird things that my other finches don't.
Like for 2 days now she sits on a top perch in the corner of the cage and often just stares towards the wall or turns her neck a lot all around but not her body, and then just flies in small circles in that one corner spot. Just over and over again.
For 2 weeks prior she was very activity rarely still and once in the big cage she just flew all the way across the whole span of cage and just loved to fly everywhere in the cage.
I just don't feel I can get a read on her if she's ok or not.

Zebsoc
Hang in there I sometimes watch mine and they do weird little things and I start wondering what is wrong with them, but then they seem fine, eat fine,so I sit back and try to not panic on there little things they do,I hope your little one is fine and maybe it is just unique .I don'the know that much about the little guys (finches, canaries) just leaning along the way is all we can do and give them the best life we can and hope they are happy,I do know as big as my flight cage is sometimes they fly in a little circle or hang upside down I use to think may-be they have mites or something is chasing them a mosquito or little bug but I really think they are just birds being birds

Re: Waterlogged
Sounds like your bird hasn't had the right preening done to make her water proof or alternatively maybe something stripped her waterproofing. Maybe she never had a bath prior to you. She will soon settle down, preen properly and get more waterproof.
She is probably just adjusting to her new environment. Taking it all in. Sounds like her new home is an improvement.

Thank you both for your reassurances, that makes me feel better.
Glad that her feathers can improve on becoming waterproof.

Re: Waterlogged
zebsoc She is probably fine , not all finches/canaries are the same , they are individuals just like us and every finch has a different personality and skill set , like my male canary built a perfect nest and the female just ruined it , oh well xD
Also my female gouldian would start all of a sudden to fly like something is chasing her , not in circles like your canary , but from perch to perch , from wall to wall and would start breathing very fast , but after 10-15 seconds of maniac flying she would just get on any perch and act as if nothing had ever happened I dont know why , but I don't see it hurting her , maybe it is just like Barbara said , they are just birds being birds ^_^.
