So what if all of a sudden you have a bird down. I have an emergency ICU with accurate temp controls to 105 F but I'm interested to know how others approach an emergency situation. I know it's important to raise the bird's temperature and allow their immune system to work on it's own but I'd like to know what kind of specific meds I should stock just in case.
Besides a heat bath, what does an avian vet do when a sick bird comes in for treatment?
Thanks for your important advice.
Paul

Ronex 12%
Tri Sulfa
Medistatin
Baycox
Baytril
for mites either topical Scatt, Ivermectin 1% or you can use s76 (this goes in the water, it also has to go through the liver, topical does not it goes into the blood stream via absorption through the skin)
Also recommend AIL....Avian Insect Liquidator

Re: What meds do you keep on-hand for emergencies?
Thanks Cindy,
I have a few but I'll order the whole list. Besides mite treatment, what are the specific treatments for the 5 items on your list? If I don't know the cause of the illness, which treatment would you start with?
Who is your preferred supplier for all of the above meds?
I have a very popular 20" bird bath. The water is replaced with fresh every morning and I'm wondering if I can periodically add some Ivermectin or S-76 to that or should I withhold the bird bath and add it to my other water sources or do both.
I've been keeping birds for many years in a large landscaped aviary with a variety of foods and plenty of fresh water so mine are rarely sick - but it's always good to compare notes once in a while.
Thanks again,
Paul

With hold the bath and use the treatment according to directions. Ivermection 1% is topically applied
I purchase my products from glamgouldians.com.
Her website describes what each medication is used for.
Often if a bird falls ill we usually look at the belly, physical symptoms, droppings.

Keep in mind that if you don't know what you are treating, the medication you use can be more harmful than doing nothing. Many avian vets believe that the overuse of OTC drugs has led to a resistance in many birds.
