Gouldian finch doesn't chirp?

Hi,

I have a male gouldian, a female gouldian (both purple breasted and black headed), and a canary.

My male gouldian has never made a sound (no chirping, etc.) although the female "talks" to him a lot.

I *think* he can hear and see, although I have wondered if he may be partially deaf or blind. When I first got him, he had trouble flying and would fall down, but he is usually all right with flying now. However, often he seems to have trouble finding the entrance back into his cage, and I have to put him in myself, and he is also often unwilling to go outside his cage, whereas the others like to fly around.

Any thoughts?

I was also wondering if I should get a third gouldian, so the female has someone who will speak her "language" (and it might encourage him)?

Gouldian males, don't generally 'chirp' as such.
They have a whispery lisping song, which you can usually hear especially around sunset. When you have several males, they will congregate in a group and sing to each other.

Having trouble flying, could simply be due to having come from a small cage at the breeder's, without enough room for flight or to develop his flight muscles.

Regarding being unable to find his way out or back into his flight cage...
If he has enough room to fly in the flight, I would leave him there until he feels comfortable enough to come out on his own.

In the meanwhile, I would make sure that he has a varied diet, of a very good seed mix, hard boiled eggs and veggies and greens. Also crushed egg shells for Calcium and a mineral block.
