I have tried treating my finches foot with neosporin and sometime use water just to clean his foot... but I dont understand what else I should do... please help! what should I do? I have him in a seperate hospital cage.

i think what got your bird is the scaly mite
ivomec and cade oil are needed , i'm not a vet nor a health expert ,wait t'ill sally or cindy will be here

this is not mites it is likely a fungal or bacterial infection...some call it bumble foot. Need to ask first if you have an avian vet?

Best thing to do is to wash the foot in an antiseptic wash or if you can get chlorhexidine (feed stores usually carry it, dilute it as instructed) and wash the foot a few times a day. Here in the states we have an over the counter product called Hibiclens (chlorhexidine is the main ingredient. Dilute 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water, you can make smaller batches. Wash the foot in that. Try to soften the crusting..sometimes the birds will pick up droppings on the sole of the foot and it cakes there causing an ulcer/sore. Keep everything clean in the hospital cage. The crusting may soften and come off, if so the foot will likely be raw underneath.

Ointment... Neosporin. You do not want to glob it on since it can get in the feathers, instead take a little and rub the ointment (not cream) between your fingers then apply.

This is like an ulcer on the foot. a small cut on the foot leaves the area open to bacteria and fungal....wash you cage grate down and the perches. You can use diluted hydrogen peroxide to wipe the perches with, vet wrap your perches and change that often, it will help cushion the foot.

If the foot feels hot or get really red you may need a broad spectrum antibiotic/see a vet.

some of the crusting on the bottom of the foot can be caused by the stepping on droppings that have dried and caked on the foot, it causes an irritation and that is a pathway for bacteria and fungal to find it's way in

Just a reminder, not everyone has access to an avian vet. When possible, that is the best source for help and information. If not, then people turn to the internet, which often is a poor substitute for an avian vet, but sometimes better than nothing, with the caveat that diagnosis from descriptions and photos is usually just a guess.

Sally yes i agree thanks for the remider. Go figure i was on need of ivomec and cant found it in the petstores and he was under my nose a few meters from me at a vet lol

haroun definitely not scaly mite, more a case of bumble foot, can easily be cured with the appropriate medication

yes we have cleary seen that it was a case of bumble foot and can be easly cured . btw a cure that makes six months to devellope the simple case tp worst one similar tp scaly mites.

A bird can have scaley mites for 6 months to a year before you see signs they have it. The scaling is actually the mites' feces it leaves behind as it eats tissue and blood. The burrow deep into the skin, the tunnels leave a pathway for bacteria and fungal to get into the foot.
