Zebra finch foot and nail infection

Post by 2016 » Tue Aug 23, 2016 9:23 am

Good day to all. I have attached some photos below. A couple of Zebra finches' feet have become infected. Does anyone know what this is? Thank you.

the tips of the two toes look neucrotic, possibly from injury or a fiber around the toes.... the infection likely has traveled into the foot... open wounds are a pathway for fungal and bacteria. He will likely loose the two toes, if the foot is not treated it could spread, is the foot hot?

You can wash the foot in chlorhexidine or if you can fine Hibiclens 4% at the drug store you can dilute it 1 tablespoon to a gallon (make smaller amounts if needed) and cleans the foot several times a day.
You can take neosporin and rub a little bit between your fingers then apply to the area.

Keep the cage floor clean, clean perches and you can wrap the perches in vet wrap to cushion the foot, change that out often.

Did you check the toes for a hair or fiber that may have wrapped around the toes?

If the foot and leg become red and very hot you will likely need an antibiotic.
