Dead Male Gouldian
Hello,
With a heavy heart I am writing that my male Gouldian died this morning . When I woke up he was sitting in the ground , I gave him some water and he slowly lied down .I have attached the pic near the vent / bottom 1. if anyone can identify the reason . Is it infectious ? I have another lovely female gouldian who was living with him . 2.Shall I buy another male gouldian as she seems to be very lonely. But I can do that not before Sunday . Will she survive by then alone .

Re: Dead Male Gouldian
It's impossible to know from a picture what happened to your gouldian. I wouldn't rush out and get another till you are sure the female hasn't been exposed to whatever that is. She will be fine alone til you can sort out if she is well herself.
very sorry for your loss
best of luck

Sorry for you loss,
The clumping of undigested seed and collecting of droppings like that can be a few things, was the bird thin, sharp keel, was the lower belly sunken in or swollen?

Debbie is right in regards to rushing out to get another bird to replace the one that passed, I would not right now..... the hen that is remaining may have the same issue.
To many owners rush to replace the bird and end up loosing the new bird because the established bird may be carrying a parasite. an illness.

Re: Dead Male Gouldian
Thanks All for your sympathies. The bird became thin over a week .he was drinking a lot of water and sleeping all the time.the belly was sunken but a lump was accumulated as you can see in the picture.
The bird was trying to hide the disease as they do in the wild may be that's their mechanism to survive .I guess the dropping was black .
The only thing that bothers me is it all started after a day they ate egg mix ( egg white & shell) small pieces .I will take a day off tomorrow and see how the female behaves.

Re: Dead Male Gouldian
athens.asad, I'm so sorry for the loss of your beautiful gouldian.
I hope that your hen remains ok and that she can eventually have another mate. All, how long would you wait before adding another bird?

Re: Dead Male Gouldian
Same sort of thing happened to me. The vet actually guessed my male was an egg bound hen and wanted $300 to do X rays and an exploratory surgery. I said no to that and asked for a shot of calcium and some other vitamins for the"hen". After the bird died (2 weeks later) I noticed the area around the vent was swollen and very soft to the touch. The bird's female BB mate was eating the same food all along and she's still doing fine out in the main aviary with plenty of boyfriends to choose from. Still don't know why that bird died but I suspect some kind of gastric infection around the vent area. Always upsetting to loose a bird for any reason.
So sorry for your loss,
Paul

Re: Dead Male Gouldian
So sorry for your loss, but the only way to be sure of the reason a bird died is to have a necropsy done by a veterinarian, and that can only be done fairly soon after the bird died. As others have said, don't rush out and buy another male, and when you do get one, you should quarantine it for at least 2 weeks.

Plucked feathers and dark skin around swollen vent area. Droppings watery and a sand color.
