New societies

So I gave in and rescued two chocolate pied societies from a pet store yesterday. I had to do it they were jammed in that cage like sardines. Anyhoo, they are in quarantine in a separate room from my canary. They seem to be doing ok. A little quiet yesterday, but very frisky after I put the cage outside this morning for a bit. I know they found the water dish because I've seen water on the newspaper. I have seen both of them eat millet, however I haven't seen either of them eat any seed. Should I just give them another few days to settle in? Also, I'm thinking of bringing them into the same room with my canary so I can more easily observe them and provide them more stimulation. Thought? Also, I sprayed them with scalex when I brought them home. Any other preventatives recommended or should I once again just wait and see how they do?

Given the situations that you rescued them in, I would keep them in quarantine for 6-9 weeks before you introduce them with your other birds. Unfortunately you never know what they may be carrying. Hope this helps.

Good luck with your new birdies.
I agree with Brian, that it's better to keep the new birds away from the present ones, just to make sure all is well.
Keep an eye on them to make sure they are eating properly. The fact that they are eating spray millet, just means that they like it more than the regular seeds

.
Splashing in the water is normal. Societies love to bathe and will do so at every opportunity .
I would also add some greens to their diet, which are very healthy and which most birds enjoy. Also some hard boiled eggs and crushed egg shells.

I tried giving them celery greens today but no interest. Not interested inn hard boiled eggs either. I guess that they have never been exposed to anything out side a goldfish bowl sized cage!

I bought 1 of my society finches from a pet store, it took her a week before she tried eggs and veggies. Just keep adding it to their diet and eventually they will give it a shot.

Congratulations on your new societies and bravo for rescuing them. The first thing I do when I bring in a new bird is to put something in the water for stress. I use nv powder for two or three days. Have you tried hanging little pieces of fruit or vegetables on the side of their cage ? I do that for my birds sometimes so they have to work a little harder to find it, instead of just flying to a bowl. Good luck with your new birds.

Birds seem to be settling in better today. They still seem scared of a few things like the natural as opposed to dowel perches. But I've caught them eating seeds as opposed to only millet. also seem more vocal and active. I caught one of them singing this morning!
