I'm new here and new to keeping finches. And I just Love Love Love them!
Anyway, In the beginning of Nov. my female star ( named Morisot ) had ASM. I treated with Iverlux. And treated her cage mates ( her star mate and a pair of owls). Well, she recovered. All was well. Yesterday, Morisot was a little puffy but mostly seemed normal. I thought she was maybe going to lay an egg. She gets that way sometimes. This morning she was dead on the bottom of the cage. I'm devastated and her mate Cezanne is not happy either.
My question is this...to prevent further deaths should I treat her former cage mates with an antibiotic?
any thoughts???
ps. I'm afraid I did not notice what her dropping looked like up until this point...

With egg binding there are techniques our long term finch owners have used.
Liquid calcium/vitamin D combo is the most tried and true for this. I'm no vet but my birds are never without it 3x a week when then are suspected of laying. Antibiotics can do more harm than good, if you dont know from a vet what is wrong.
Im sorry you lost your gal

I'm so sorry you lost your girl. It is so heartbreaking when you lose a bird but even worse when you don't know what happened. When you say that she "sometimes gets like that", do you mean she puffed up then eventually laid an egg? Was she laying? I agree with "Babs". It is very difficult to diagnose a finch illness and can become worse with the wrong meds. I would watch all the others closely. If they seem OK for now, you have time to get some calcium on hand. You can't go wrong with more calcium in their diet. Keep them on a healthy diet with lots of fresh greens, egg food including the shells and a clean cage and environment. Best of luck and let us know how they are doing.

Does it sound like egg binding?
I say "she sometimes gets puffy" because this past summer she got puffy and sleepy and I called her breeder who I got her from and he said put some heat on her with a lamp and make her comfy and warm ( and went thru the checklist of other stuff like egg food, grit, cuddle bone etc which I always had for them ). I put a lamp on and the next day she was in her nest and back to her old self. So I assumed she was puffy yesterday due to an egg. She wasn't sick looking, just a little puffy. Oh she was so pretty. I was told she was a strawberry yellow faced star.
I do rather ere on the side of caution with meds and glad to have heard from you both for support. I also didn't want to deny them medicine if that is what they needed. I'll be keeping a watchful eye on them for sure...and I will seek out that calcium mix!
as a side note...how long would one wait to get a mate for the widowed? I want to kind of quarantine them but don't want to stress my male star by being lonely.

It does sound a little like egg binding especially if it happened to her before....but you never know for sure. I know here in SE Texas I had a difficult time finding Stars. I think if you have an opportunity to find a mate for your little guy, I would not pass it up!
Wish I could have seen a photo of her. I have never seen a strawberry yellow face. Good luck and post pics of your new bird for the rest of us to enjoy!

Not sure if this picture will show up for you or not. I'm not sure how to do it. But my ( former ) female star is on the right. Her mate Cezanne on the left. If you can see it.

Sorry you lost your pretty girl....
For some reason, I have not had very good luck with Stars (not sure why, because they're not supposed to be difficult).
I have lost a couple of them over time, and now have a lone orange faced male, living with a bunch of tiny Waxbills. After I lost the mate to this boy, I decided not to get anymore Stars.
They are sweet birds though.
The boy that I have now and his mate, raised a couple of abandoned baby Owl finches for me some years ago, just stepped in and took over the eggs, hatched them and raised them like their own.
I would get him a new mate, especially if he doesn't have other birds to chum around with. He'll be happier for it, and so will you.
P.S. Your kids in the picture, are beautiful.
Here's one of my lone Star with companions.
