Hello Everyone,
I was at the Pet Shop today, (and no, I didn't buy any birds!), and picked up this item for the kids.
It has prebiotic fiber(pharmaceutical grade),dehydrated cultures of: Bacillus species, avian Lactobacillus acidophillus, avian Enterococcus faecium, organic pigment.
The instructions however of how to use it, are somewhat vague....
For a period of 7-10 days serve the content of the vegetarian capsule at the rate of 1 capsule per small and medium bird, or 2 capsules daily for a bigger bird, then serve 2 times weekly for maintenance.
DO NOT GIVE THE VEGETARIAN CAPSULE TO THE BIRD.
" Open the vegetarian capsule and mix the product with feed or drinking water."
Ok, so when they say : mix into drinking water, how much water are they talking about? I have multiple water bottles and or containers in each flight and or cage, and so......
I actually emailed them with this question, but so far haven't had a response, so I was wondering if anyone on the Forum has ever used this stuff, and how did you serve it to your birds???

I haven't used it. Perhaps you could try sprinkling it over your egg food/veggie mix, rather than putting it in water.

I have used Avitech probiotic daily for an an extended period for a sick bird as per vets advice. It is in powder form in a jar and I gave 1/8 teaspoon to 16 ounces of water. Ingredients: 2 billion CFU (colony forming units)/g, lactic acid bacteria. Source of natural microoganisims for feeding birds. AviBios.
http://www.avitec.com. He was given this daily for several months. I changed it out twice a day.I had the same question. According to Avitech, any excess will just be excreted, so the measurement, water or probiotic, doesn't have to be exact. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response.
I had thought of sprinkling it on their food, but then I wouln't know if everyone is getting the same amount or not.
Putting it in the water, seemed to make more sense, seeing as everyone drinks, but if you empty one capsule into too much water, it may be diluted too much, where as on the other hand, if you put it into a too small an amount of water, it may be too concentrated....

So you were using an 1/8 of a tsp in 16 oz of water with the Avitech...
I wonder if 1 capsule measures out to be 1/8 of a tspn with this product, I'll have to measure it out in the morning.
Hopefully I'll hear back from these folks, and see what they recommend.

hi elena
what i understand from the answer that you got
you put in the water (water drinker) the amount of probio according the weight and age of the bird .
1 capsule in water dring for adulte bird and 100g max as weight
same 2 capsules for adultes and with at leaste 101g as weight and tthe for the fledglings 1/3 of capsule.

That's what I understood as well, but I have different sizes of water tubes and containers in each flight.... so unless I add a capsule to each tube, bottle and container.... do you see my dilema?
What I actually decided to do, is use only one tube with the baci+ in the water, and hopefully they will all drink out of it in an hour or two, then I can return the rest of the containers with regular water...

If you put probiotics into tap water, which is usually chlorinated, you'll just kill the beneficial bacteria.
I hate non-specific directions. 'Sprinkle onto food' doesn't do it for me. If they care about their product and about your birds, they'll provide good directions.

Darn it, I didn't even think of that . Thanks for bringing that up Dave.
I actually added this stuff to their water the other day, and had one of my Gouldian boys drop dead that very afternoon. Now I'm not saying that this was the cause, but it just seemed rather odd....

Oh my dear girlie.

The whole move has just been a nightmare.

I'm hoping this is the last of this string of sad events for you and your birdie babies.
Do you think their is a possiblity that something might be going through the flock thats just reared its head due to the moving stress?
