A seemingly healthy female lady gouldian fell off her perch in the morning. She flopped around the cage a bit. I separated her from the rest of the flock and she died a day later. she did not look sick, act sick ( other than not flying)....I've sterilized my cage and feed bowls and everyone else seems in perfect health. Does anyone know what might have happened- she was only a year old..

it could have been almost anything, maybe an insect bite (spider for example), or she flew into the side of the cage at some point in time doing damage that wasnt visible. sometimes birds just drop dead for no apparent reason at all and we never know why.
I understand your looking for an answer but at times there just isnt one.
am guessing that your other birds were in the same cage and as they are ok so far you can rule out fumes of any type and also food or water contamination.

As Mick says these things happen...when you just have a few birds these things are a disaster. When you keep and breed over a hundred these things are still upsetting but happen on a regular basis with no definite reason. There are so many reasons why our little charges decide to fall off the perch.

Sorry to hear about your hen. They are not cheap birds, and it's upsetting when one dies without any apparent reason. I have found that my gouldians are more delicate than many of the other species I keep, but still hate it when I lose an apparently healthy bird. Glad to hear that the others appear to be fine.

Was a male in the cage with her? One of the possibilities would be eggbinding.....
