After adding a new companion.....help!!

Post by France81 » Thu May 11, 2017 2:39 pm

I added a new companion for my lavender waxbill, the next day my birdie started to be less active and he does not like the new companion. If the new one tries to be near him he chases her away, now the newbie wants to take charge of the cage by trying to mount him which is making things more difficult. They won't share food or water, if one decides that it wants what the other is having the chasing begins all over again. The good thing is that they are not hurting each other and last night they slept together by the nest's door. I'm becoming a little worried since Duke is not signing any more and he seems to be a little more puffed and sleepy during the day, drinking and eating seems normal. Today makes it 10 days that they are together, I wonder if I should take Duke to see a vet and separate them for a while. Please help! All I tried to do was to make him happy since he lost his companion, but now it seems that I just messed things up because truth be said he looked much more happy before all of this.

If they are both males, perhaps taking away the nest to reduce territorial behavior might help.

I don't know if they are, I assume the one I had before is but is not guaranteed. Do you know how to tell? I asked a pet store once and they said I need to do a DNA test.

Lavender male song....
Whichever one is singing like this, it's your male.

If males sound like that both of them are males, the one that passed was also a male and they loved each other. I think I might have to remove the nest but they slept together the first time last night in one, but maybe by removing it might force them to snuggle together on the perch. Any thoughts about adding a second nest instead of removing the old one?

If they're sleeping in the nest, I would leave it in.
