Click or copy and paste the link above to see pictures. I'm not sure how old the bird is. I was told it is a house finch. I believe it to be a female. Any how this birds back feathers have been ruffled in an upward direction for over two weeks. It's not exactly friendly.

But I do let it out of its cage and let it sit the window sill with some seed. It's free to fly around our home. I put it in itsacageand coverit at night. I clean the cage mostly daily. Food and fresh bottled water gets changed daily. Please if anyone can offer me any info or wants to see more pictures please respond. I can send direct photos of Da Finche through email it would be easier for me that way too.

that looks to me more like a hybrid of house finch and canary.
the white patches on his head and the feathers close to his feet indicate that to me. i could be wrong though as the hybrids look very alike like their parents.
the feathers curled up ime would indicate some calcium deficiency.
i see it has a closed band. you could get some info from that band if you post the letters and numbers of that band here. hopefully someone will know what club comes from and it would have the breeders # aswell.
anyway you are taking good care of it. try to add some extra calcium in his diet and some eggfood sprinkled with some multivitamine will definitely benefit him. Even better if you could give him a couple of hours of sunlight

Hi just to help you out abit you can change the cage just once a week change its water daily.
Make sure you keep blowing out the Shulls which are the shell off the seed which layer on top of the seeds looking like seeds when really they are not it can starve the bird also add bits of fruit and cabbage through the week
Are u looking to keep this aswell also it's really good you are letting it out for free flight
And to me it looks like a greenfinch

Welcome to the Forum,
I'm thinking Canary by the looks of it.
Does it sing at all, or just chirp?
Regarding the shape it's in, it looks a bit rough (might be moulting), but hopefully nothing that a good diet and good treatment won't fix.
I would offer a mixture of good quality Canary/Finch seed mixed together. A variety of fresh greens, some apple, hard boiled egg ( both white and yolk for Protein), crushed egg shell, cuttle bone and crushed oyster shell grit (for Calcium). Some bird vitamins, either in the water, or on the food.
I would also offer a daily bath of tepid water.
Some direct sunlight (as Andy mentioned above) is very good for them, but offer shade as well so that he/she doesn't overheat.
Let us know how things go on, and good luck.

It chirps. Kinda like "meep" or "meep meep". The numbers on its band say 10 PA those are small with one above the other then 26 LB. I don't know much about hybrids. Thank you everyone for your responses! I'm going to get Da Finche a cuttlefish bone tonight.

Looks like a canary to me, female is it doesn't sing.
Not sure what's wrong with its feathers though.
Give it a good seed mix, with some fresh food on the side ever day or two; she would love some leaf lettuce, broccoli tops, sweet corn, hard boiled egg and apple slices.
Canaries love some natural sunlight and a bath a few times a week.
Keep her on a natural day/night cycle, dark after sunset and waking with the sun, to help her body clock get back on track. Hopefully then she will molt, as this is the time of the year they should do so, and maybe replace her messed up feathers.
The care needs would be identical if she is actually a house finch, though she doesn't look like like one to me. Technically, keeping a house finch is illegal, but a brown canary is almost identical to the layman, so just say she's a canary if anyone asked.

Those feathers make it look like it was a result of a breeding with a frilled canary, a rather unfortunate cross.
Could that be the case?
What did the owner do to the bird?

No too sure. Her friend was pet sitting it at her job. She mentioned she was watching her friends bird but she didn't take good care of it and wanted to find it a new home. I the. Asked where's the bird and she said behind the register. And I asked to look at the bird. So i seen the bird and it's fluffed feather condition. I asked how much does she want for everything. She said nothing. So I just took the bird home.

Both male and female Canaries will say meeep meeep, especially if they are a little nervous. Only a male however will sing if he's content, happy, in good health, and not moulting. A female will usually only chirp.
Here are some pictures of Canaries that might fit Da Finche's description and looks.

The bird looks like Elana's picture. A cross breed.
Did your friend confiscate a bird without knowing it's feathers were due to breeding?
Most animal abusers dont hire pet sitters. This bird might have been in a good home.
Elana's second picture shown below looks strikingly like the bird you posted....and its simply a frilled canary.

Hm. Intering info. I'm totally a newbie at this whole caring for what now seems to be a canary. I'll try giving it a bath now. I'm going to some googling on what is the best method. I'm open to any kind of information anyone wants to offer. I'm going to also tr y a canary forum.
As far as the "pet sitter" thing goes. It was her co-worker. Who most likely didn't know a thing about caring for this bird. I have no idea where Da Finche was bought from or came from. I'm going. O take a stop by the store today and get more info.
