Found a sick pigeon need advice

Post by StodOne » Mon Sep 04, 2017 10:17 am

I found this little guy while walking my dog and the symptoms he is showing is putting his tail down all the way , beak opened and heavy breathing although that was before i caught him now he is not opening his beak , body slightly tilted forward as if he doesent have a sense of balance , his eyes are closing and he doesent have the instinct to get away , it was pretty easy catching him.
It was pretty hot outside so it just might be the heat , or maybe egg bound?

I gave him a bit of water he did drink a lot of it , but he wouldnt take it by himself i would have to lift up the little plate up to his beak and submerge a bit of his beak under the water and he started drinking..

It really could be anything from a stroke or seizure, to an unseen injury/puncture from a cat. Really no way to tell from here. Is his breastbone sharp?

Will he take water or seed? Offer both.

If you suspect a bacterial infection you could start antibiotics. Unless you see a vet , the rest will be his will to live.

Be sure to sanitize your hands and clothes before you go around your own birds , he may be ill with disease and he will most probably have some parasites. Most wildbirds carry a few hitch hikers. ;)

Babs Yep he takes plently of water ,i've put some vitamins in the water and grinded a bit of the cuttlefish bone in the water , he isnt taking seeds i will give him some time to see if he will take seeds.

Of course i took all precautions to insure i dont get anything from him to my birds

Thanks for response

Babs Sorry I didnt see the breastbone thing ..
I'm not sure it feels pretty hard and sharp although I thought that that was normal for pigeons .

I have noticed something , it seems it is not breathing heavily , it looks like she is trying to pass an egg , I don't know for sure but it looks like it , I will try to put some oil on her vent to help her out .
Any suggestions for the egg bound pigeon?

I've never owned or rehabbed a pigeon, so I'm in the dark on that. But if you think its eggbound, place it on a heating pad with a towel over the pad or in a box with a heating lamp and hopefully it can relax and release. We both know with egg binding, it probably wont end well. :( There's a thread somewhere about a member successfully breaking the egg and the bird did fine. But it's risky.

In the wild a predator would have spotted it and dispatched it already. If it does die, I would leave it outside to give it back to the food chain.

Years ago when my ionizer killed my societies, I left them outside for the crows. The crows seemed grateful for the meal.

But this is a whole different level..

Watching an eggbound bird struggle is aweful. I know, like Dylan, you are doing all you can.

Well I think it passed away , it got stil all over and stopped breathing , i cant feel the the heartbeat at all :(
I wasnt sure if it died because its legs got still while it was still alive , and as i tried to handle it it stopped breathing with oponed beak and just got stiff all over and now i cant feel the heartbeat :(..
When it died i noticed something moving on its back it is really small a small ant sized thing but it is long kind of like a centipede , I wonder if those are mites or something , although I doubt i could see mites because they are too tiny for eye ..
I dont know what to say I rescued 2 before , one was egg bound and the other ones tail was shot by a hunter .
The one that got shot by a hunter didnt have any pellets hit it , basaclly it lost only its tail feathers and i took it in so it can grow them back , i released it .
The other one was egg bound , it passed the egg and flew away.
Sadly i couldn't save this one I have no idea what was up with it...
