AVIARY QUARANTINE

Hi I am new to finches, as yet I don't have any. I am going to try and get all or most of the birds I want within close proximity to one another. If I can achieve this I want to put them all together in my aviary and run a quarantine program for them in one go. Some of the birds I want eat live food but I don't have any live food setup yet. That is the next thing after I get my aviary finished. What I want to know is will the birds that eat live food survive on seed along while I am quarantining them as they won't be breeding. Any advice would be helpful. Regards.

They should be fine with seed, though you can give them some eggfood as well. I use Quiko Classic eggfood, as it is dry and therefore stays fresh for much longer.

Thanks Icearstorm for the info. I had been thinking of giving them sprouted seed as well but hadn't thought of eggfood. I live in Australia and haven't seen Quiko anywhere. I will do some research and try and find a suitable substitute in Aus. Regards Mick.

Hi Mick,

Regarding introducing all of your finches at the same time...

The problem with that, is that if one pair or even one bird is sick, then it can spread like wild fire through your whole new flock.

It's different, if you get all your finches from the sme breeder, where they have been housed together.

Hi Elana, I am hoping to get them all from the one place, or at least most of them. Almost finished my aviary, just have to put the door on, perch it and add sand and it is finished. At last!!!

You must be getting excited by now :D .

If all your birdies come from the same breeder/aviary, then they should of course be alright together.

If they come from different sources, then I would be cautious and quarantine either one group or the other.
