Horrible looking growth on my bird

Post by ann » Sun Dec 17, 2017 3:05 pm

I just noticed a red ball, about half an inch in diameter, hanging from my gouldian. It's showing up right at the intersection of where the purple, yellow and green meet. It looks just horrible and I know he is going to die from this. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

His feet are also scaley and in bad shape (if I am seeing the picture correctly). This is a case where you take him to the vet, or if one is not available....make him as comfortable as possible. I've never seen a tumor. But that is pretty big.

I would also be worried about mites by the looks of his feet and check your other birds for mites as well.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thank you! All the birds got a Scatt treatment about two weeks ago when I brought in a new bird, but his feet do look rough. I think we will have a spa day this week.

There are no vets here that know about finches. I have some heat at the bottom of his cage, but he seems to be acting like nothing is wrong. The tumor actually looks slightly smaller this morning.

Ahhh good to hear he's been mite treated. Now it's just wait and see.

How quickly did the tumor grow? I found this link, in case any of these resemble what your finch has.

Thanks for the link, the pictures made it very clear - his tumor was the last one, cancerous. It said it wouldn't be painful until it got large, and then I should consider euthanasia.

Now I'm no expert, but I'm wondering if this could be a lipoma....

Here's an article about these fatty tumors:

It may not be a tumor at all. There are other things it could be that are not that serious. You don't know, so just let your bird live his life as he has been doing. Things that look very serious often are not and will resolve themselves. Don't jump to conclusions.
