Are these signs of an infertile finch
So finchie as most of you know has been with me since she hatched from the egg and I would say probably ten months old now she’s had three clutches when she was young she had a clutch but this was when she was with a female so it doesn’t count, then when I got her male and they first had a clutch she was 6 months old, then now she’s just had one clutch with the same male.
However both her clutches have never hatched and this one is showing no signs of being fertile again but I’ve noticed all her eggs look like they have scratches and bubble inside them so is she infertile because it can’t be anything from food as she’s super healthy and I always give her little extras as she comes to my hand she gets bonuses.
Or could it be her male as I’ve inly had them paired to each other but can males be infertile ?
Anyway I’ve paired her male up to a new female to find out but any info would help

When I said doesn’t count I mean that it weren’t a clutch through breeding

And yes, a cock can be infertile, too.

Re: Are these signs of an infertile finch
Fernando yeh I know it was my beginners mistake I’ve already had a few telling off about this it was because when you search the internet it says three months old they can breed and she kept trying to breed with her dad so I checked to see the age I can get her a male and got her on and she bred at 6 months old then again now
Her first clutch was when she was with a lone female finch so she was laying happy eggs which I can’t stop
But thanks I’m gutted she’s infertile tho I hope it’s the male

Re: Are these signs of an infertile finch
She is probably just to young.
If you are in UK - and the tº suggest you are! - now is winter. And birds should not breed in winter. For their own health.
It's you who can help them not to breed!
No greenies! No nests!
There will always be the odd egg, but if a hen keeps laying eggs it is highly energy consuming. You must try to avoid it!
Internet says all you want. You have to ponder which information is real and true, and what information isn't.
Most animal get fertile - adult - early. That does not mean they breed as soon as they are adult, nor that they should.
Usually birds like our finches would breed at the earliest the next normal breeding time; that means they are nearly one year old.
The easiest method to achieve this is to keep sexes apart until then.
Fraza, I'm very new in this forum and I shouldn't be answering here. But I feel someone must do: you - and only you! - are responsible for the well-being of the birds (pets in general) you keep. You must know about hardiness before winter months arrive. You must know about the basic needs of your birds. Birds should not breed before they are more or less one year old! Birds should have a maximum (better less) of three clutches a breeding season!
It is you who must know this if you own birds.
A hen laying eggs continuously isn't happy - either with another hen or a cock, that doesn't matter - a hen laying eggs continuously is in constant stress. She needs help - not another cock.

Re: Are these signs of an infertile finch
Fernando okay I understand your concern but I know what I’m doing and she is a happy finch and is very fit and healthy I let her have another breed inside my house where it is mice and warm so I could keep an eye on her and make sure she was okay as she just wanted to breeed with any male jn the aviary and was breeding a lot so before u insult me can u find the facts first pls because u are quite new and I’ve had the other memebers on the forum tell me that when hey are 8-9 months they are okay so she is fine and by the time breeding season comes she will be near a yr old I’m not talking getting her a new cock straight away that’s why I’m using her male first to see if he’s the infertile one
Anyway I don’t want to fall out but she’s fine I know 3 expierenced breeders and aviary keepers near me who of one has bred since the 1960 and he’s told me before that if you don’t set them up for breeding and just have them in the aviry and they decide to breed them they are ready as long as they are fully grown and got full colouring which is when they are 6months old but with all my others I try to leave till they are 8 months this one was my first ever clutch when I very first started so obviously I was gonna make one mistake and the one was letting her have a clutch and a pair too early

Re: Are these signs of an infertile finch
And finally when we buy from pet shops and breed are finches most of them are very young themselves and have been took away from there parents as pet shops get new stock which is ther breeders new chicks so even you have probably bred a finch too young without back knowing

Re: Are these signs of an infertile finch
My zebra finch eggs weren't fertile when I tried breeding in winter and then came to spring the same pair hatched 7 babies in one lot! Anyway I hope you can figure out what is going wrong! Are they very bonded? Maybe try taking the nest out and then putting it back in, in a month or so and try again then?

Re: Are these signs of an infertile finch
I don't worry about the age too much. If they're ready to breed then they're ready, I find it unfair to stop them. And when I tried separating them, my male was the saddest little bird you ever saw. I think he may actually be quite old as I was given him. If I stop him from breeding tho then he will probably die. The breeding will be what's keeping him alive haha

Flight Feathers yeh well hopefully I have as much luck as you and I don’t worry about the age too much as long as they aren’t very young as it’s there natural instinct when they are ready
Hahahaha and I know what u mean I have one that just lives for breeding that is this one now she’s just in love with her male but as I’ve took him out to lie with another female she’s ended up paired to a new panel in the aviry

Thin lines in the shell usually indicate calcium deficiency. I imagine it gets dark early where you are; lack of sunlight would limit the amount of vitamin D3 she could process, leading to poor calcium absorption. You may need to supplement vitamin D3 along with whatever they usually get.
