S76 Step by Step Use?
I have a Gouldian Finch with scay leg mites. I just ordred S76 and Im wondering how exactly to use it from day 1? I read on gouldian finch website and other websites and its not clear to me. Also do I have to do a full cage clean up? If so at what point of the treatement?
Also what can I do until I receive s76?

Hi, I'm not sure sorry, but hopefully someone else on this forum will be more knowledgeable! All the best and I hope your gouldian makes a full recovery!

On that's so annoying! If I find any useful sites I'll let you know. So what kind of medicine is it? Like do you apply it on the bird or does it have to eat it?Sandra wrote:Thanks! Re: S76 Step by Step Use?
So I think you apply the S76 right onto the scaly leg mites and you do this every day for a week I think. And sounds like you can also put it in their water. I'm not a hundred percent sure tho as I've never used it but that's what I got from reading about it. Not sure of this helps much sorry!

If you go to back dates on the health topic on this forum, I think you will find postings addressing scaly leg mites and, also S76. There should be directions with that anyway.

Would collidal silver work? It seems to help most things!

Re: S76 Step by Step Use?
Sandra I can't seem to copy this from ladygouldian.com website, but the instructions for using S76 for scaly leg mites is to apply undiluted S76 by dipping a Q-tip in the S76 and applying directly to surface of the legs. Do this once a week, the same day, for 6 to 8 weeks. The same day you apply the undiluted S76 to the legs, you should put S76 in the water, so once a week for 6-8 weeks. S76 in the water only stays potent for about 8 hours, so mix up a fresh batch each time you give it, don't make up a big batch and keep it in the fridge. The mixing ratios for small amounts are:
1/4teaspoon = 1.25ml for 250ml of water (approx. 1 cup)
1/8 teaspoon = .63ml for 125ml of water (approx. 4 ounces)
6 drops for 63ml of water (approx. 2 ounces)
https://ladygouldian.com/S76-air-sac-mite-treatment
Be sure that you aren't confusing the treatments for air-sac mites with the treatments for scaly face mites, they are two different pests. As far as complete cage treatment, I can't find any information, but I would assume that once your treatments are finished and your bird is clear of scaly face mites, I would do a thorough cleaning of the cage, including replacing things like wood perches. This is what you do for blood-sucking mites, and I don't think it would hurt with scaly face mites.

Re: S76 Step by Step Use?
the scales you see on the legs is actually mite feces... get some chlorhexidine or Hibiclens 4% (drug store) and wash the feces off the bird... the Hibiclens is chlorhexidine also it will keep the skin clean, and help treat for staph and bacteria...the mites burrow deep into the skin and live off tissue and blood... the feces (scaling) by the time you see it means the bird has had them for a long time... it is usually passed by contact such as in a nest to the young... birds can have it for 6 months to a yr before you actually see evidence of the scales... so always best to do a mite preventative upon bringing a new bird home.
The oral s76 is of ivermectin... Ivermectin when added to water does not mix well, it can also burn the throat and GI tract causing the bird to drink less which mean the bird is not getting enough of the treatment...monitor the water intake. If birds are not drining it then use a Topical ivermectin or Scatt, it skin absorbed and goes directly into the blood stream.
They also make a Moxidectin Plus which does two things...gets all kinds of worms including tape and gets all kinds of mites.... it is an oral that goes into the water.. Moxidectin stays in the body for longer than ivermectin, many use this product and a happey with the results.
If one bird has scaly mite then you need to treat the others in the cage with him... general cleaning and wiping of the perches is fine... if you feel you want to make sure nothing is missed you can remove the birds, sanitize and bleach the cage, perches, remove nesting material and bamboo nest if you use them... scaly mites does not transfer like feather mites does, it is by close contact.... you can also spray the perches, cage, nests down with AIL (Avian Insect Liquidator)

by the way if you are giving charcoal... it not only interferes with the absorption of vitamins, minerals, can cause impaction if overly eaten but it can also interfere with the absorption of treatments and preventatives, medications.
