My Gouldian Finch is all blown up !
I noticed this morning that my one Gouldian Finch is all blown up. He literally looks like a blown up balloon.
Does anyone know what is wrong with my Finch ?
Thanks.

Not sure... Does he look sick or just like he's way over eaten?

No, actually he does not act sick at all. He is active, flying and so I don't know how this "Blown Up" look happened overnight....

I have had this happen to one of my finches because she over are. She was just a ball for some time although She acted fine. Not sure if this is the reason why your bird is blown up?JerseyGuy wrote: No, actually he does not act sick at all. Do you mean his feathers are puffef up?
A bird with puffed up feathers might be cold or sick.
Normally birds will puff out their feathers after a bath to dry them, or after preening to get all the feathers into normal position.
I'm glad that you decided to take him to the Vet. If you suspect airsac mites, then he needs medication. If it is airsac mites, then all your birds will need to be treated as it is highly contagious.

Hi,
No, it is not his feathers that are blown up - it is his entire body, and his chest is bulging outward.

If he isn't just fluffed up, perhaps it could be a ruptured air sac. It isn't very common, but may result in a bird looking like a partly-inflated balloon, with air visible beneath the skin. It can be treated by poking a hole through the skin with a sterile needle and slowly letting the excess air out, though this is best done by an avian veterinarian.

Re: My Gouldian Finch is all blown up !
It is with great sadness that I have to report that my beautiful Gouldian finch, "Ricky" passed away yesterday.
He had been to the Vet. The Vet put him on Baytril, but he never improved after 6-days on this antibiotic.
Now his cage mate, "Fred" does not look well at all. He has from what I can see, either a white "ring" around his eyes, or a loss of feathers around his eyes. I can't tell. Has anyone seen this ?
Thanks to all of you.
