Possible egg-bound???

Post by FinchLover&Breeder » Mon Mar 19, 2018 4:08 pm

Hey guys it's me Nick again. The reason I am making this post is because I'm worried about my one female zebra finches I call Momma Bird (because she is the original mother bird). I saw her and her husband Jack Sparrow matting about a week or so ago. At that time there was just one egg in the nest. As of this morning when I checked there is still one egg in the nest and none on the bottom of the cage broken. I'm concerned that the egg is stuck inside her but in a position that allows her to use the bathroom. Is there anything I can do to help her or am I worrying for nothing and it's normal for the egg to not be laid a while after matting?

FinchLover&Breede. Has she cuttlebone, grit, eggshells available?!when u touch her belly do you feel the egg?! Does she take bath on daily basis?
Put her under heat bulb, and one or two drops of liquid calcium directly in the beak.

She had a cuttle bone. Killed it today. I sprinkle crushed egg shells in their food. She hasn't had a bath in a couple days. She won't let me near her to feel if there is an egg or not. I can do heat lamp but don't have liquid calcium. I haven't seen any in stores down here from what I've seen.

As long as she acts ok, I wouldn't worry about her. You should get some liquid calcium to have on hand though, in case it is ever needed. It can be ordered from several bird supply companies. I have Cal-D-Solve by Avitech 800-646-bird, avitec.com. Morningbird also puts one out. In a pinch you can use human liquid calcium, Calcionate Syrup. Can get at a cvs drug store. Comes in a one pint bottle though, and you don't need much at all. Sometimes you can get calcium at bird fairs too.

Will do. Just got to convince her that eating greens will not kill her. She doesn't like eating greens but loves crushed/mashed egg when I offer it.
