Urgent help broken leg maybee dying chick

Post by Fraza » Thu Mar 29, 2018 11:20 am

Help coco today got his self tangled in the nesting material and the chick was stuck to his foot coco has ended up with a broken leg and the chick is still alive but it’s whole leg is bright purple swollen and bleeding leg it took me 30 min to seperate them and coco will not go back in the nest however coco female one of them keeps going in with it so hopefully it’s feeding it

The chick actually looks really well it was pecking and squeaking at me for food and then running around on the floor but it looks really serious and coco hasn’t eaten all day so maybe that’s why he’s not going in the nest he’s just in the food feeder

I'm so sorry this has happened! Coco's leg may not be broken if he is using it at all and eating, that is good. If the little one's leg doesn't get infected and it is eating, it might survive. Wish I could be of more help.

So coco leg is actually not as swollen now and he is using it but just being tender on it not putting his full weight down so I know he’s okay I just hope this little fella will be okay I am so shocked it managed to survive in the pic it looks fine but when I first got to what happened he was tangled in all the bedding I do not know where they found that strong because I give them tissue and hay but they found it from somewhere

Fraza

That sounds like it was quite the tangle, sheesh.

Keep an eye on the affected legs.

If the blood flow was not cut off, and there was no break, and no infection sets in, then the legs should be ok.

If however parts of the leg start turning black, then that part is dead, but deal with it as it goes.

Make sure both are eating, and offer Coco a warm light (which is very comforting to these guys when they are under the weather).

Hope all turns out well.

lovezebs hi elena nice to speak to you haven’t seen you active on posts for a while are all your birds well

And coco is now fine his leg has gone back to normal just his back toe is broke and he can’t bend it round stuff however he’s became really attached to the chick he’s not leaving it alone for one minute always feeding the little fella

And regarding the chicks leg if u look closely u can see the knee part of it it’s vended back forwards and the bleeding has now stopped however it is still looking sore I hope he ends up okay he is due to fledge in one week

Do you think I should make some idone water and bath the chick in it to kill infection if there is one or should I leave it be I given them a new nest

Fraza

I would rub some polysporin or another antibiotic cream that you may have available on the open area, just to make sure that no infection gets in there.

My birds are fine Frazer, thanks for asking love.

lovezebs that’s all good news something always goes wrong for me when I’m at a good point I’ve got all my birds bred and all have eggs all sitting and incubating this chick was really big then this happened and I’m not going to lie when I first walked in the aviary and saw coco leg twisted dangling upside down I panicked like crazy

I’m just hoping no infection is caused

Do you have cloth/silk plants in or on your cages? They can shred the leaves, pulling off threads for nesting, and that might be where it came from. Is why I now use only plastic plants, I used to keep trimming the frayed leaves off the cloth ones, but finally decided it wasn't worth the risk.

If the baby bird loses his leg, he will adapt to life without it, since he won't know any different. And you can modify some of the perches in his cage to make it easier for him. People do this all the time, so if he survives this immediate trauma, he should be okay.

Gracie85 he’s actually in my aviary and he’s doing well his leg has gone back forward the way it should but it can’t move in there’s a black ring around it where the string was wrapped around

I think he will be okay when he fledges because I have about 10 society’s that keep trying to sneak in the nest to feed him so there’s no doubt they will be lookin after him

Thanks for your reply I hope he pulls through and his leg doesn’t get infected
