Cut forhead

Post by Gold124 » Mon Apr 02, 2018 4:47 am

Hi stumbled across this site a while back been actively reading through,
Got some Finch's about 6 weeks European beeds and I noticed the other day that they all in last couple of days seem to have a cut on there forehead just above where the beak starts. It has removed the plummage around the area and seems to have dried out/scabed over
My first thought was that this was down to fighting pecking but every bird in the aviary has it so doesn't appear to be one dominent bird bullying the rest.

My next thought is that I have noticed them trying to stick there head out though the weld mesh, which is small 12mm square so all they get out is there beak.
But in doing so are they cutting there forhead off the wire repeadly over a prolonged period?
Any thought appreciated

It could be a mite infection. I would definitely treat them against Scaly Face mites. In my country, I would use moxidectin. You could probably get scat / S76 or Ivermectin.

That doesn’t look too good. Hope you can figure out what it is. Very cute goldfinch.

Gold124 are they in with different species or only goldfinches in the aviary

I do know that goldfinches can be agressive to other species

There a nice bird pretty calm but the cock can be a bit of a boss around the seed table likes to be fed first

What would your thoughts be fraza? Pecking or is it mites, infection?
Have only noticed in last few days but aviary is only month old so wouldn't have thought parasites would have set in that quick. As said I have put in couple of feed bowls to try limit any fighting at feed time.but until they heal, there no real way of knowing if that's the issue

Gold124 I’m unsure I didn’t think it was due to fitghting because they normally pull other feathers like the back and tail if they was fighting Burbank for it to be spicifically there I doubt it

But I also doubt it’s mites because it’s a month old and stuff the only thing I would say is have you got iodine blocks and mineral blocks for your birds because I’ve always used these and never got an infection or mites
