Hi.
Your goldfinches are wild caught. They are afraid and trying to escape, and injuring themselves in the process. It's not mites. They need as much space as you can give them, and covering the cage down on all but the front side will reduce this behavior.

They will eventually calm down, though it takes as much as one year for wild birds. The more space and hiding places they have, the better they will adjust.

Good luck.

Do people catch goldfinches in the wild and sell them? And yes it does take a year for wild birds to settle in as my goldfinch I rescued off our cat is settled in now after a year. (In fact it’s been well over a year now and she seems to be very happy) She has an injured wing which is why I kept her. Poor thing - it sticks out terribly.

The only odd thing is that there are caged bred birds with similar markings. Guess there just being spooked too by the others

Flight Feathers Ano yeah I was watching a show how they used to catch finches and they used to spread glue around a trees branches then leave seeds under the tree or food then when they got scared and flew into the tree they got stuck on the glue, then they would gather them up I think it’s horroble

Before putting them in an aviary, I propose you to tame them first in individuel cage or at least get them used to your close presence (frequency). This will help you to reproduce them easily (a hen well tamed)

For those born in cages, the goldfinch learns by apprenticeship, if their parents were in an aviary and on fearful temperament, their offspring will be too.

Add water, for dry wound healing.
