I think you should try giving your bird a splint. People use splints on Chinese quail so why not a zebra finch too? I had a zeb that had something go wrong with it’s leg causing it to be wrenched out back wards and he couldn’t land on perches because of it.

No question about birds is stupid! :D A splint is like a support. So you have like sticks on either side of the leg to support it/hold it up, and then have the whole thing bandaged. It means it holds the leg upright so it can’t just be splayed out on the ground. A breeder once showed me a pic of splint she had used on a chinese quail.

I think you should give it a go as it’s probably your best bet if you want the finch to be able to perch etc.

I've read that sometimes you can use things like flat tooth picks or flat wooden coffee stir sticks and wrap with the type of bandage that only sticks to itself. I think you can get that at a drug store. I believe there is information way back dated on this forum about this.

Yes that’s the kind of splint I was meaning. I hope it works for the finch!

So I’ve had some branches drying out for a few months now and I’ve decided to stick them in as they are bigger for the chick and I was right he can happily walk on them

If you’re going to try it, you probably need to do it before it starts flying lots, otherwise I don’t think it will work. Also the leg will stiffen up too much.

Yikes! So you mean half the foot is going to fall off? At least it doesn’t bother it
