Quarantine: how close is too close?

After some searching, I have found a person selling a few young finches on craigslist. I am going to look at them and was wondering about quarantine. How far should the new bird be from my hen? I was thinking of putting him in the room next to where my bird is, but I am afraid that is too close. Also, how long should he (or she) should be quarantined? I was thinking about 4-6 weeks. Thanks in advance for any help?

sparrowsong98 I don’t even think they have to be that far I think they can be in the same room just no contact and if the bird looks healthy and has no signs of illness you can quarantine for as low as 3 weeks

sparrowsong98 I always set up quarantine depending on the source of the birds. Ones that came from friends, so I knew the care they had had, did the shortest quarantine. Ones from craigslist would get the longest quarantine, at least 4 weeks, depending on their condition. I would suggest a quarantine in a different room from your other birds, and feed/care for your birds first and the quarantined bird last, always washing hands in between.

At least a month. When you bring the new bird home treat it with lice and mite spray and worming medicine.
