Does this look like scaly mites?

Post by mew5280 » Tue Jul 24, 2018 8:33 pm

I just noticed this growth this morning then noticed the rest and have now isolated her and gave her a Scatt treatment and vitamins. I have never had a bird with scaly mites but I don't know what else this might be? Her eyes look swollen, too. Sorry for the close ups, kind of icky. She is acting normal, eating, trying to get out of the hospital cage she's in. I feel bad because I didn't notice this earlier.

I have had this bird for over two years, I have 11 finches in the same cage, including her. None are new, I have no new pets, nothing has changed in their environment and none of the other finches look like this or have any growths or anything. I'm puzzled. The large growth you see is hard to the touch, not soft. (the last photo shows her two years ago when I had just gotten her as reference). Thanks for you help.

(I will be calling a vet tomorrow but I've never had to take any of my birds to one so wanted to do what I could for her until I get in to see someone)

I thought scaly mite is just scaly looking skin but this actually looks like a growth of some sort like it’s something more

In the first photo, look at the eye, the area around it is distorted and inflamed. I’m wondering if it’s some sort of viral infection now. Maybe it’s more than one thing going on. So strange to me when the rest of my birds are just fine.

It's not scaly mite, it's a growth. To prevent your other birds getting sick, put the sick bird in a separate cage. Could be conjunctivitis as the finch's eyes are swollen.
Have a nice day!

Update: After a long time analysis and watching the bird, who has been in a hospital cage since I found her like this, I know it’s not mites AND better yet, I washed her face with a q-tip and the “growth” came off so may be some sort of sinus infection or conjunctivitis. Treating with Enrotex which just arrived today but have been putting colloidal silver on it and she’s improving but still not completely well.

Probably something that was adhered to her beak.

Scaly mite looks like lesions on the finch's legs and/or foot that flake off. It is cause by mites burrowing into the finch's skin and can kill them if not treated.
