I'm just wondering if female finches can control when they want to lay eggs. I have a young female gouldian that I hasn't ever laid an egg. My society laid non-fertile eggs quite regularly and I was wondering if all female finches lay regularly or if they can control it to some degree.

Just like chickens maybe. Some are good layers, some not? Anyway, I guess they can control it to some degree. I wanted my GB to take a rest. If they usually lay 4-6 eggs, then how come after she laid the 3rd egg, and then I removed the nest, she stopped. Didn't keep laying until a complete clutch was laid. So it appears she can control it.

I'm no expert on ovulation. But I think you and mother nature would have the most impact. You by what you give the birds to eat emulating breeding season.some people this way give them a all seed diet over winter, then when spring comes give them the whole kit and kaboodle. And mother nature with humidity and temperature etc.I have approximately 14 different types of Ozzie finches and they all don't breed year in year out some seem to stop for a season then start up the next.
