age , gray hairs

Post by goldfinchowl » Thu Dec 13, 2018 10:35 pm

Some of my society finches have gray patch in center of back.
On YouTube I don't see any society with gray patches.
It seems more of them r starting to get the gray patches.

I bought them from craigslist this summer. Could they be old?

Also the black female in last picture below, her tail seems kinked and higher than the rest.
Again could it be sign of aging? Other reasons?

No, I don't think they are old. The dark colored one may be molting and getting new feathers in. They might be young. An old bird will have long nails and may have thick scales on the legs. The dark one might be a different variety of Society.

Wildbird - thank you
The gray and the crooked looking tail I've noticed maybe at least 2 months.
Would moulting last that long?

Would the center of their backs turn gray just because of it being wintertime?

They are indoors.

I don't see any on YouTube with gray nor crooked tails.

The gray is probably the bird's permanent color. The first two pictures look like it is in a molt, but in the last one, it looks good. I don't see anything wrong with the tail.

Fraza, I can't really post a picture. My computer is on dial up and with XP and I have never tried to send any pictures. I have three little Societies, all males. They are so nice. Get along well and all jump in the nest at night. One is chocolate with the gray and one is chocolate and white and a fawn and white. All have the pretty markings on the breast. I really like Societies too.
