Sick Zebra finches HELP!!

Post by Alannahtaylor » Sun Feb 17, 2019 7:05 am

Hi so my finches seem to be sick it’s been a few weeks now if me trying to pinpoint what was wrong.

At first I thought they had air sac mites because a few of their voices are squeaky, they are all really sleepy, grooming and fluffing a lot, potentially lost weight ( I don’t weigh them as it’s too stressful but they seem a bit thinner) rubing beaks on perches a lot and one of them is tail bobbing, and was aspirating occasionally.

So I treated them with Ivomec in the water for three days (but 1 lot wasn’t made fresh).
It’s been about 4 days since - all symptoms are still present except for the aspirations and the one that is tail bobbing now has a clear watery diahorrea?

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what I can do I would be very grateful [-o<

It could be a respiratory infection. It is difficult to treat when you don't know for sure what you're treating for. If you had a good trusted avian vet to go to, that might be good. Otherwise, I would provide a heat lamp to keep one corner of the cage warm, but provide enough room that they can get away to a cooler area. The best ones are the ceramic bulbs that only emit heat and not light. Some of the pet stores have heat lamps too. I've used the Zoo Med red bulb in a pinch, since it doesn't have as much light to it at night. Provide good easily digestible food like spray millet. California Golden, new crop is best and easy for them to digest. Also Japanese millet seed. Hard boil an egg, cut it in half and use a kitchen shredder to shred some. You can mix some millet, and shredded carrot in it. Be sure to change out in two hours so it doesn't spoil. Get some dry egg food at a pet store like Petco and that can stay in. I use Quicko. Provide clean good quality seed and water. I use spring water.
