My first operation

I did my first finch operation on Saturday. One of my gouldian hens developed a swelling on her head that caused the one eye to tear. Someone told me that it was caused by pips in the actual head. He told me to give the bird doxybiotics for 10 days and to apply an antibiotic salve to the eye on a daily basis. I did just that. I opened the bird's head on Saturday and a surprising amount of pips came out. Now 2 days after the op, the bird is still ok. I hope she makes a full recovery. See the before and after photos.

We just call them pips because most of the time they are shaped like a lemon pip. A friend who had the same problem, send his "pips" that he removed to a lab for analysis. I am quite eager to find out what caused it. I think that it is a sinus that was blocked. Not sure if birds have sinuses.

Ja, I suppose it was some kind of puss that hardened, but I would like to know what caused it and how to prevent it.
