lost a baby gouldian today

Post by dfcauley » Sat Nov 22, 2008 6:08 pm

I had a little yellow gouldian to die today. It was the smallest one of all that had fledged. I am still not sure what the problem was. It has been out of the nest for about 4 days now. Suddenly they stopped feeding it. The kept feeding all the others, but it seems they were picking on this one and pecking at it. It has been a long terrible day. I watched it beg and beg for food, but no one would feed it.

I attempted several times to feed it but it wasn't having it. The other 8 are doing great and eating on their own, although they are also still being fed some by parents.

Oh I'm so sorry Donna! I hate it when this happens. Very glad to hear of the other 8 - were they all from the same clutch?

No, they are two different sets of parents.

I guess they knew something was wrong with it. That may be why they refused to feed it anymore.

Yes, I've heard it said too they will do that if a young one is unwell in any way. Doesn't make it any easier when it happens to our birds.

Nature can seem cruel, to us, at times.

Sorry to hear about the little yellow. We just had the same thing with a silver hen this morning. (know it was a hen because of the genetics) It was the last to hatch as well. Darwins theory at work I suppose, but it never makes it any easier when you lose one.

Donna....so sorry about your loss of a little one. I can't imagine watching the chick beg and not get fed....It truly is hard to watch when Mother Nature makes her decision. :(

But I guess that doesn't stop us from having our pet Finches...does it? We take the good with the bad...even though I don't like it one bit!

So sorry you lost your little one. I guess the parent't know best, but it still is hard, especially when you can't seem to be able to help.
