My girlfriend has a hen LGF that she has had for awhile and say her beak has grown crooked (not sure if it is top, bottom or both) and she keeps cuttlebone in cage (I have not seen the beak myself yet). She is able to eat and is healthy. We know it needs to be trimmed. Was curious how do they usually trim it? Does it get filed down with an instrument or clipped off. Just curious what can be done.

When trimming be very careful not to over trim, and cut into new growth. It'll bleed like the dickens. Also, be very careful not to get her tongue.

We use Sandy Perches next to all of our water drinkers so the birds can work their beak after getting a drink. Ever notice how most finches will swipe their beak after getting a drink? It lets the bird do most of the work for you so you don't have to worry about trimming as much if ever.

If we do have to trim we use nail clippers, and a bright light to help us see better.

I agree with Sean's post above. I have small concrete perches next to drinking dishes. It seems to help with beaks and claws.

For those that still require a trim from time to time - I also use regular nail clippers and a bright light.

Thanks Sean and Liz. I will pass on the info to her. She owns other various birds and has worked as a vet tech, as well she is a trained dgo groomer, so I feel she is capable (not me though) of doing okay. Thank you both so much for the info. I do also keep on big long perch covered with the sandpaper covers.
