babies still in nest...

Post by adiekaty » Sun Nov 30, 2008 11:01 am

Today is day 18 for my new zebra babies....
They should leave the nest soon but aren't even poking their heads out. Is this normal? They look great.... markings on their tails, they are so cute! So I think all is going well.... I guess this is where I need to be patient... (never been to good with that)
Isn't it around 18 days to fledge?
I lost 3 the first week... but the last two seem fine and well fed.
Just wondering.... These are my first finches (had previous birds) so I am still learning...
Thanks to everyone on this forum... I am getting alot of info. You all are great!
Have a great day,
adiekaty
Also... I have a larger cage I would like to transfer parents and babies into. How long after they fledge do I wait before I move everyone?
Gouldians, Societies, Java's, Spice, Magpie Mannikins and Lovebirds...
Two German Shorthair Pointers, 2 cats, 2 Bearded Dragons, 1 Blue Tongue Skink, aquarium with a betta and 22 koi in a pond out back!!!!
A box turtle and a softshell turtle...
Can I count the husband and 3 kids in here too?

Hi,

They should fledge any day now. I am sure they are fine. Sometimes when we are so excited, it seems forever for them to come out.

I would not move them until they start eating some on their own. Zebras are usually great parents and may tolerate the move, but I wouldn't chance it.

Good luck and let us know when they fledge.
Donna

Thanks Donna.... I am tired of WAITING..... ha ha...
Actually it's been alot of fun... Didn't expect babies so soon....

Does anyone know why my profile wont update?
I have tried several times.... Yesterday it kept my signature, but not where I live... (which is Katy Texas)
Please tell me what to do to fix it..
Thanks

I don't know why it wouldn't update. I just tried it by updating mine to the city and state and it worked fine. Are you typing it in under location and hitting the submit button? Try it agian... maybe it will work.

The babies are out of the nest..... Oh my... They are soooooo cute....
We were late for church cause we all had to watch....
How exciting this is..... I hope they do well....

The parents feed for how long?
When will I be out of danger of losing one? I sure hope they do ok....
Its hard all this baby bird stuff, but very enjoyable....
Thanks,
Adiekaty

The parents will probably feed for about two weeks. Just put some millet in there and they will begin to nibble on it in a day or two.

Good luck!

congratulations, Adiekaty, I always leave the young off all finches for at least 4 weeks with Mum and dad.as Donna said they should be feeding themselves in two to three weeks.but give them a extra week to minimise stress.

I always give the juvies extra time with mom and dad after being completely weaned - as Gomer says to ensure there is no stress when moving them.
