Bald headed fledgling Zebra

Post by jeanne223 » Wed Dec 10, 2008 9:05 am

Good morning,
I have a pair of Zebs that I purchased in July of this year. Their first clutch produced two beautiful and perfectly healthy babies that I found a good home for. The second clutch 1 baby died before fledging and the other baby fledged and was bald everywhere poor little thing was pathetic. I figured something was wrong with him because both parents were picking on him. The poor thing died a few days after fledging.
Now the third clutch produced only one live baby. He came out yesterday and his head is totally bald. What is going on with these Zebs? Anyway I took the nest out and threw it away. No more babies for these guys for some time. Does anyone know why the baby has a bald head and what are his chances?

I haven't heard of naked or bald Zeb babies before. How old are the parents? Are you able to see into the nest without touching it or the cage?

Bald baby

The baby has fledged is not in the nest. He flies very well and looks okay except for the head baldness. This is what the last baby looked like when she died only she was much balder body area and head.
this baby has good feathering on his body. I threw the nest away I do not want these parents having any more babies for awhile. They have been rasing babies since July. Too much maybe I should not have let this last egg stay but I didn't have the heart to throw it away as it was a surprise to me. I am just hoping this little guy makes it.
