LG hen making weird noise

Post by ShaneW » Wed Jan 07, 2009 5:33 am

I noticed this morning that my gouldian hen is making a weird sound, its like a rasping sound 'vrrrt vrrrt' but she doesn't do it constantly. Should I be concerned?

I think she is ready for breeding as her beak has become a much brighter colour and she is sleeping next to the cock every night.

There are so many noises our birds make that are unheard except when it's quiet.Their vocabulary will include threat sounds and sounds of contentment that we just don't notice.
A green cheek conure of mine sits on my hand and when I take him close to a hen lovebird to 'say hello' she approaches carefully to the side of her cage making a strange churring noise.I've had these birds for years and have never heard this sound before...only when I put him close.Whether it's a threat or just saying 'Hi' I haven't the faintest idea.

My female society was making a strange noise that I never heard when the male would get close and they've just started breeding and nesting a few days ago. I'm going to assume it's some sought of mating call but not sure. It sure was a strange noise, lol
