i was away and asked my parents to geta light for my gouldians so they get a flourescent light for reptiles. now the two have burnt eyes i think and they will not open them at all. i try and keep the cage dark and spray them with warm water which seems to help for a while because thet open there eyes but then in about a few hours they close them again. any thoughts? will they be all right. they seem to be able to navigate around th ecage and eat and drink so this is good right?

I am glad you answered this post poohbear. I saw this post and didn't even know how to answer it. I think this is a very serious situation and would get them quickly to a vet as Paul has suggested.

How awful - I'm sorry to hear they passed away. I hope you return that light. It must have been exceptionally strong.

I wouldn't have thought it possible either! In fact when I was looking at flourescent tube type bulbs for the aquarium canopy light that I use...I saw several bulbs that said they were good for reptiles AND birds. But they were for a source of ultraviolet...and not heat lamps. Maybe the light that you had was for heat?... If not, then it was a pretty strong light!

I've heard it recommended that you put the light at least 12" from the birds...but I have it just about 2 inches above the top of my cage, which makes mine only about 8 inches from the birds. So I also put some silk plants under it to give them an option to get a bit of shade if they want. It doesn't seem to bother them at all. It says 6,700K on the bulb I bought which said it was suitable for birds. I've seen them at 10,000K, for reptiles. These bulbs don't get hot though, they are strictly for light.

So sorry about your birds. I'm sure your parents feel awful, too!

What kind of bulb was this ? where did you get it from ,I would really like to know so we don't get the same kind.I am very sorry for your loss

i already retuened it. sorry, i dont know what kind of bulb it was. my parents got it while i was away.
