My nrw male gould was drowning in his bath dish and now he is on the verge of death. hes shivering and is breathing with extreme difficulty. it looks like he has air in his crop that wont come out no matter how hard he tries to get it out. I put him in a hospital cage with aheat lamp to warm him up. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO!!! he is rocking back and forth wheezing and caughong with labored breathing. I'M SO SCARED!!!

PLEASE HURRY

Oh I'm so sorry - I don't know what to do for this!! keep him warm and perhaps put a towel around the hosp cage to help keep the warmth in.
Ohhh keep us posted. If I think of anything else, I'll be right on here. I think you're doing as good as you can right now.

Thank you so much for yor sympathy Liz! he seems to be getting better little by little, step by step. his feathers are now almost completely dry and although he is still breathing heavy (hopefully because of stress) but he is no longer wheezing or coughing. it's cute that he's slowly getting back his personality. every time he sees me come to the hospital cage he hops over and starts chirping. please say this is a good sign.

Oh yes - that IS a good sign - very good! You can almost take a sigh of relief. Please keep him warm and calm though and make sure he has water and seed/millet in the hosp cage for tonight. I would not take him out until tomorrow morning. Let him sleep there.

If he isn't coughing and wheezing that is a great sign. If he is showing any improvement that is wonderful! Keep him warm and I would leave him with the heat for tonight. Do you have any NV powder of Thrive? That is a great thing to give them to drink if they have been under stress. Also maybe some millet in his cage. Keep us posted!

Liz... we think alike! I think we were typing at the same time.

i put a face cloth in the cage after a few minutes in the dryer. i gave him a small handful of seeds and a cutting of millet. i also gave him a water dish made from the screw on lid of a conditioning seed tub. it is a little less deep than a peanut butter jar cap and it is about a 1/2 inch deep. now he's singing like theres no tomorrow but i'm still gonna keep him there overnight to monitor him. do you think it would be safe to put him back in the cage tomorrow while i'm at school?

I think if he seems okay tomorrow that it would be fine. How deep was this water dish? It seems odd he would almost drown......

it was a bathing dish that was filled to much and i think it waterlogged his feathers. his guardian angel must of told me to go upstairs and check on them or elsei dont know what would of happened. (hypothermia, death from exhaustion, stress or drowning. he certainly has a lucky star shining bright above him. he also is the biggest fightter with strongest will to live because this just happened about a week after his cage mate died of a burnt eye. he was the only survivor and he's still fighting for it.

Lesson - get a shallower bathing dish so it cannot be filled more than 1/2" of water by anyone.

He probley had water in his lungs.If he made it through the night,He should be ok.Then put him back into his own enviroment.Fix the problem with potential drowning,So this does not happen again.

i took the bathing dish out of the cage so the problem's solved. i think the thing that saved his life was whem he was shivering horrendously i hand fed him a bit of warm chick rearing formula to warm him up. also because he wasn't eating on his own. i'm almost posotive these horly feedings saved his life. it was also a risk because i'd never handfed a bird before but i knew the techniques.
