how do i no if my birds have this? I cacth them and put them up to my ear to hear them have this churping sound and not this click nosies. Some have this and some do not. It takes some time to cacth them in a big cage and they are or what looks like they our out of breath. Would this cause this churping sound? I know that one soc. dose this couching sound from time to time.
i wish they would make a sound video so you or i know what to hear for, it would make things alot smoother

What kind of birds are you talking about? It is rare for other birds to get air sac mites. Mostly gouldians get them.

I have not had a problem with air sac mites, at least as far as I know, so I can't really tell you what it sounds like--supposed to be a clicking sound, according to what I read. Do you treat preventatively for air sac mites? It is a good idea to do this every 3-4 months. You can use S76 or Ivermectin in the water, or you can catch each bird to administer Scatt directly to the skin.

If you are talking about your Societies being out of breath when you catch them in a big cage, that is normal--they will keep their beaks open. And I'm with Donna, I don't think you have to worry about your Societies having air sac mites. If you have Gouldians, then it is a good idea to put them on a preventative program. They won't necessarily die from having air sac mites if you treat them.

Hello there!
I just joined Finch Forum and read this post about the airsac mites.
I have recently bought someones breeding Gouldians- 3 mated pairs and one single female. Only one of them exhibits signs that are what I believe to be airsac mites. I noticed this male making noises kind of like a little sneeze so I thought that he might have a respitory problem but after reading much info and listening to him carefully I was able to hear a little clicking after the sneezes so concluded that he must have the mites.
I am getting ready to treat him as well with all of the other 6 birds with s76. I have read that it is safe for breeding pairs and since I have one pair sitting on eggs I am hoping that treating the birds will be safe for them.
I have read that you have to back this up with a good cleaning of the cages after two days of treatment but I am scared to move the mated pair with eggs around to clean the cage. There are 4 cages stacked up on this stand made special for them and the nest boxes hang on the outside of the cages which have to come off in order to slide out the cages.
Does anyone of any knowledge with using the s76 formula?
Thanks, Wendy

I would not disturb the birds. Just go ahead and treat them in their water and their bath water. It is good for them to bathe in it also as this will kill any mites on their feathers. You will need to follow up in a week with the treatment.
BTW welcome to the forum. Congrats on your new birds. We would love to see some pictures.

Thank you so much for the quick reply.
Should I clean the other cages??
You have Cordons? I looked high and low around here but couldn't find any breeders. They need the live food I read??
I will get some pictures up soon

Welcome to the forum.I think I would treat all the birds with s76 but I wouldn't remove the nest box's I think they would stop setting, if only one has the symptoms,I would give them the s76 like the instructions in there bath and drinking water
If you fill in your profile then we will know where your from, makes it A lot easier answering questions.

I wouldn't bother any of them since you just got them. I would just treat them in their water, but I would treat all the birds.
Yes, I have courdons. They have to have live food when feeding babies.
Where do you live?

I was trying to fill in my profile but was having trouble down loading a picture. I'll try tomorrow.
Anyway, I live in New Hampshire, USA
Thank you so much for your advice.
Can you get the S76 where you are? I heard it was illegal in some places??
Thanks, Wendy

I love that sight. That is where I bought the S76 from along with tons of other stuff that is just so healthy for my birds. I think that they are eating better than me right now

I'm going to go start treatment of the S76 right now. I guess you treat the water for 2 days in a row for three weeks. Lord willing I won't have to touch their cages. They all got a good scrubbing when I first brought them home 0n the 26th of February and I am always changing the bottum tray so maybe that will do for now.
Can you believe that after their move here from approx. a half an hour away, stressing them all out with a magor cleaning because boy were their cages dirty, and putting them in a new place that I had one pare laying eggs buy the 3rd of March up until the eigth. She laid 6 eggs! I do not candle so hopefully they are fertile.I leave that part up to God.
The hen and male seem to be doing a wonderful job tending their eggs so I hope to see some babies in another week or so.
Well I had better go treat the water now. I'll let everyone know how it goes.,Wendy

Great update - they must be very comfortable to be breeding so soon. Good luck with all the eggs!
