Hi everyone,

Had Gouldian eggs due to hatch on sat, so i checked yesterday arvo, 3 babies were dead, and they were squashed kinda, well i noticed there bums were big and yellow, i threw them out, A 4th babie was still alive with food in 1 side of the crop, i noticed his bum looked a little big, checked the nest today and he was dead just like his siblings, iv attached some pictures. any idea what caused this?

Might seem weird but i cut the gouldian up to see what was the mass in its bum, and it was a yellow substance, then i came across wat seemed possibly like a stomach which looked to have had some seed in it.

seen this before in goulds?

they were first time parents, but this one was feed, don't know if mabey too much?
or just somthing else.

any help?

Thank you for NOT showing the cut up hatchling. As for the deaths - they may have just gotten too cold if the parents didn't sit on them and keep them warm. Otherwise they look like they were ok. The big yellow 'bum' area is where the egg sac was absorbed and being used up for the first 24 hours or thereabouts - completely normal.

I believe it's a learning experience for most Gouldian parents. Good luck with future clutches.

I agree with Liz, they look normal. It is hard to see these little babies die, but it is the down side of breeding. As Liz said, they may have gotten cold. As far as them looking squashed, dead babies often sort of look like that. Hopefully, they will do better next time.

Thanks for replying guys, they were being incubated, and iv never seen hatchlings look that big in the bum area comared to all my other hatchlings, does anyone have pics of the yolk sac on their babie gouldians??

im so sorry for your lost. good luck next time. Just keep your fingers crossed. I'm sure they do a lot better job. Make sure to keep on providing good diets, vitamins supplements, egg foods, greens, and millets.
