I was watching the birds this morning and I noticed the male's nails were so long they were curling under when he perched. So I decided to trim their nails. I found that one of the female's "thumbs" was broken or mutilated at some time because the nail is crooked and barely has a quick. The male's nails were easier to trim but I did cut the very, very tip of the quick on one. I had flour beside me and it stopped it.
The funny part was that about a minute after I removed the female from the cage, the male started singing. He never does that when I'm around. I guess he missed her.
