hi everyone, I burned (slighty) a pizza in my oven, although not smoke filled, the house does smell a bit...Did I just hurt/kill my Goulds? I opened all the windows a crack (its 12 degrees out here in Denver)...oh my, i am scared, I know how sensitve they are, will a burnt smell hurt them???? They are in the living room, adjacent to the kitchen....

Relax...just a burned smell shouldn't hurt anything, if it did, my birds would be in big trouble--I burned a bunch of bacon today!
Seriously, the big problem is supposed to be from teflon pans which get burned and release chemicals in the air. As soon as the burn smell goes away, close those windows--brrr, that is cold! Just don't ever use something like those aerosol sprays to cover up a burn smell, or anything else, the chemicals in those things are bad for your birds.

you need to reach over 550+ degrees F to release toxic chemicals from teflon. You would bubble and melt the teflon. Its incredibly difficult to do this and kill your birds. Although it is possible.
Goulds, Owls, Gold Breasts, Stars, Zebras, Societies
An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch
Anyone want some finches???

It definitely is possible. One member on here accidently left the Teflon pan on the stove while making popcorn and this Star finch died.
According to the EWG, hundreds if not thousands of pet birds have died due to Teflon. That might be a small number, but how many people keep their finches in the kitchen? Even pre-heating a pan can cause temperatures of over 600°F. Teflon offgases toxic particulates at 464°F.

Ok... This is a horrible story and I still feel really bad... but here it goes.
We had a Cockatiel and I spilled grease from something in the oven, so I decided to use the self-cleaning cycle...
Little did I know that even though no cleaners were being spayed and used, the oven would still emit a fume, and sadly my tiel died the next morning.
After looking through the oven manual a few montes later I realized what happened..
The manual had warnings about the self clean cycle and pet birds in the house.... Glad the warnings were there, just wished I had taken the time to read it.
