Do Society Finch Preen More Than Others?

Post by cntrymeadow » Wed Jun 24, 2009 2:30 pm

Although I was not entirely conviced that one of our society babies had air sac mites I treated all birds just in case. As I posted the baby ended up dying and so far none of the other birds have ever shown signs of air sac mites.

I have noticed however that the society finch parents and the one other baby seem to preen a lot more than the zebras and goudians...
is this normal for that species?
Or is it possible they might have mites or ?
All three look and appear healthy with the exception of preening more than the other birds.

I don't think my Societies preen any more than any other species, but they will preen a lot more if they do have mites. One good treatment is AIL (avian insect liquidator) and another is Pestex. I've only seen these online. The AIL can be sprayed throughout the bird room, cages, birds, even youngsters.
