Paper Clips - WHO KNEW! - Updated photo 7/10/09

Post by nixity » Fri Jul 10, 2009 10:23 am

So..
Stole the idea to use paper clips and rubber bands to attach the water bottles to my flight cages after I saw someone used them to attach tissue-nest-boxes..

Came home to this..

Granted, I have been using these for MONTHS and never had a problem, and this particular clip did not have a water bottle (I have extra for times when I leave town to hang extra bottles) but it was also on a side of the flight that there are no perches, and it was not in easy reach.

No idea how something like this happened..
It's just a crazy freak accident and I find myself boggled sometimes at the situation these birds get themselves into!! O_o

He seems much improved today (yes, I had to get the paper clip out, and it took quite a bit of Cheerleading from a good friend to get me to be able to do it); but I am trying not to get my hopes up right now.

He was literally dangling hanging hooked like this in my flight, I have no idea how long he was hanging there like that.
Unbelievable!!!
UGH
 :| :(

I hope he gets better soon. Birds tend to be very resilient to injury.

UGH
I use vegi twist ties to secure the doors on my cage. I've had the birds "somehow" get the ties loose. Now I'm going to pay better attention to how secure I tie the vegi ties. Better yet I'm going to order more spring latches so I don't have to use the vegi ties.

Geez! That's horrible!

Was the paper clip stuck through the lower jaw? That's how it looks like... I wonder how in the world the bird did this?

I had 2 (unfortunately lethal!) freak accidents in my aviary, both times with the netting that I have in front of the windows. I didn't want them to bump against the window, so I first installed some "fruit netting", which is plastic netting with about 1 inch spaces. When I got a few new budgies at one point one of them got tangled up in the netting while I was at work. My husband found him at lunch and he was already dead. So we installed much bigger and sturdier netting, something that is like a tennis net. (Was pretty expensive, I can tell you that!) However, when we were on vacation once the birdsitter found one of the button quail tangled in the net one day. I assume that she must have been scared of something (they sometime flutter around at night and we have to check on them) and got caught. I think as much as you try to make your cage or aviary safe, there's always something they can get in trouble with... :-(
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Here he is today.. looking much better, though still not out of the clear.
Should be obvious by this picture that he is definitely eating, now, which I'm glad about.

He is still not incredibly active, but who could blame him!! I will give him a few more days on the heating pad with rest and Abx to see how he fares.

Please mind my ignorance, but is ABX some sort of antiseptic to avoid an infection :?:
