Wicker basket mishap

Post by carmena » Tue Nov 03, 2009 1:08 pm

I put a wicker nest basket in the cage that I had placed 4 young societies that I had just separated from mom and dad. With them was a female gould that I placed with them as a mentor of sorts.
Well, the gould must have gotten her toe stuck in the wicker as this AM there was blood everywhere. She seems ok now, bleeding has stopped. I placed her alone in another cage. Her toe seems ok but the nail swivels within the toe itself. You can rotate it to the correct position but as soon as she uses it, it flips skyward. Again, the toe itself does not rotate and appears unbroken.
Question: Should the nail be removed or will it come off on its own?
I guess I am afraid that it could be a source of infection if I do not remove it...and how would I even do it?

No more wicker baskets for me. [-X

Sure hope that she heals up nicely. I beleive that this is what we call a freak accident.

It is a freak accident, but I remember reading several posts of similar mishaps with both the woven wicker/bamboo nest/baskets as well as the plastic ones. So in the grand scheme of things, the number of accidents is probably SMALL. But it does happen. :(

Best left alone...will probably drop off.Claw injuries in birds are common in the wild too...they manage to survive happily without the odd toe.

This same exact thing happened to one of my male Strawberries, the one with the babies. He got hung up in the wicker nest. His was the back toe that was injured. He still holds that foot up from time to time, but not as much as before, and the nail is still there, though slightly crooked. Hate wicker, but haven't gotten my Berries to use anything else.
