Crusty bum?

I lost a Turquoisine parakeet recently that had a totally crusty bum that had closed the bum shoot. What was the disease it had?

I think you might want to check out a forum dedicated to parakeets to get a more informed answer.

I know, this is not a finch problem, or could it be? I mainly deal with finches, but I do have a few parakeets and I thought I might ask in case this can effect finches.

I don't have any information that could help you with a diagnosis, but for future reference, I did some searching on the NFSS forum, and some of the people there talked about sending dead birds to their state lab for a necropsy, which was a lot cheaper than an avian vet. In CA, one poster mentioned a state lab at UC Davis, and another state lab in San Bernadino. Worth checking out for future use. They did say for a necropsy, the body can not be frozen, and has to be sent to the lab within a very short time of death.

As I recall back a couple of years ago, I bought a Gouldian hen that got a 'crusty bum' (as you call it), 'dirty vent' as I call it. I cleared it up by giving her a measured ratio of bleach in her drinking water for a couple of days. You might check that out too as I haven't used that method since then. But it was very useful at the time!

Perhaps ACV would work also? I give my birds this daily in their bath and also a dilute amount in their drinking water. So far, so good... knock on wood. You know, all you have to do is say something is great and all your birds are healthy and then all 'you know what' breaks lose. :shock: :? :)

Canary: Blue, Red & Yellow, BC Cordon Bleu, Strawberry, Star, European Goldfinch, Owl, Shaftail, Splendid, Rosey Bourkes, Cocker Spaniel gal, Portuguese Water guy, and a freshwater tank. (no partridge, but I do have a pear tree).
