I candled this egg today... It is only a day to 3 days old. looks like it may be doubled yolked or it is just a super big yolk.
Anyone ever had a double yolked egg hatch? Were there 2 cicks...or like a conjoined chick....Did it DIS?
It is a really large size egg also.

I had a double yolker this year. The chicks developed but it was DIS, probably ran out of room in there. Here is a picture of the chicks.
(hope this picture attachment works)

Very good photo Debbie - thanks for sharing! Sorry they didn't make it.

Here's hoping the one in Candace's nest can grow all the way.

That is really interesting, Candace. Wishing you good luck with it. It is quite a large egg compared to the others, so maybe it will be okay .. room wise. What species is it from?

Debbie,
Wow, so it is possible... I am not sure if the one I have is 2 yolks or just 1 large yolk. In your double egg was the 2 yolks together or was there space between the 2? Was the egg larger than normal? Were you giving any breeding suppliments, ova-aid, vitamin E, etc? Thanks for documenting that. I would imagine it would be almost impossible for the chicks to be able to survive room wise. It would also be awful for a gouldian to be born with 2 heads :?

I am not too good with the camera but I will try to get candle pictures if it starts to develope. So far it is just a big yellow blobThe pair are a Male I bought and is about 2.5 and the hen is a female I bred, she is 1.5. This is the first time either have been bred. I'm just glad my sweet little, virginal hen was able to pass such a huge egg without any distress. I would of hated to have lost her. And I guess that I did not mention that they were RH PB GB gouldians.

The egg was twice the size of a normal gouldian egg. When I candled it I could see that it was fertile but it just didn't look right to me. I can't say that I could clearly see two seperate chicks just that it looked different. When it was clear that it was DIS I cracked it open just to satisfy my own couriousity.
I don't feed supplements other then my own mix of herbs and my own mix of oyster shell, charcoal, epsom salt and diatomaceous earth. They also have a dish of bentonite clay. Their eggfood is hardboiled eggs with exact handfeeding formula added to make it a bit drier. Other then that they get a simple seed mix.
I also was very glad the egg passed without a problem when I saw the size of it.
Interested to see what happens with yours.

Thanks Debbie. I had not given mine any fertility aid, just normal diet also. This egg is not quite the size of 2 eggs... same diameter but longer. The hen is sitting tight so I will see. This is here first clutch so I don't want to pester her nest too much. I may just wait the incubation time before nessing with it. Will let you know what turns out with this egg.

Update.... The eggs hatched..... but not the big one. It was infertile and was a single yolk egg. The yolk was larger than normal as was the egg shell. The chicks are doing great and the parents are wonderful :D

Candace, so glad to hear that, especially since it was your hen's first clutch. Sorry about the big egg, that was a curious situation. Thanks for the update. I was intrigued by it.
