Finch Poo

Just an observation I've had about my zebra finches. They produce some of the largest droppings I've ever seen finches produce. Earlier I had to change their water dish for the second time today as I found a huge dropping in it. I looked from it to Socrates (Aristotle was in the nest, so I suspect Socrates was the culprit) and said "That's not poo. You've managed to lay an egg."

Don't get me wrong, they seem healthy. The droppings don't look like sick bird droppings. It's just an observation. I feed them the same brand of finch seed blend all the time as well as millet and the occasional fruits and veggies. I don't think there's anything wrong with them. They've produced some large droppings since I got them so it seems to be a normal pattern.

Seriously, some of these things would put a budgerigar to shame.

Should I be concerned or is large poo simply large poo?

If they are nesting - they will 'hold it' longer and thus their eliminations will be larger when they finally do 'go'. If they are sitting on eggs - I call these Preggy Poops and without even looking in the nest, I know they are sitting on eggs by the size of their poops.

Otherwise you simply have very healthy finches who are very BIG poopers!
