watery smelly droppings

Post by star » Wed Jan 06, 2010 3:02 pm

Some of my societies get lose smelly droppings. I didn't notice a smell in the last few days, but after I changed the paper this morning one of them pooped and it was all just wet like pooping out water, and it smelled bad. also it had no color. She looks good. I read that it would be a bacterial or yeast infection in the digestive tract.

Is there a natural way to get rid of this? Or do I need a treatment medicine? I do not like using medicines unless absolutely necessary. I prefer an all natural solution.

Anyone have any ideas for me on what it is and what to do about it? Everyone's help is so much appreciated.

Clear watery fluid is urine, and if there is a lot of it, or there are no other components to the droppings, then it could be from the bird drinking a lot of water, eating foods that contain a lot of water, or be a bacterial infection. Is it the droppings that are smelly, or could it be the unusually wet newspaper, which has its own stinky odor? Some veggies have a lot of water, like iceberg lettuce.

I can't help you with natural remedies, as I use the commercial medicines. If you think it is a bacterial infection, you could give an antibiotic like Amoxitex, followed by a probiotic, for the prescribed number of days. Always give a probiotic after using antibiotics, since the antibiotics can destroy some of the good bacteria in their guts. And the probiotic should be given for the same number of days as the antiobiotic was given.

Just a side note, but my Societies poop more, bigger, stinkier poops than any other species I own. Be really sure you think it is an infection before you administer antibiotics, as they are hard on the birds.
