Hi everyone
I got some avian insect liquidator and will be spraying cages and birds for feather mites. I have several questions that some of you may be able to help me out with.
First I was wondering what to do with the eggs the birds are sitting on. It will take a while to do each cage since the cages are very large and I have lots of birds. How long can the birds be off of the eggs before they get too cold?
Should I take out the perches to spray or spray them in the cages?
Should I spray all the fake vines or wash them? Or should I do both? The finches pull on the vines a lot so I don't know if I should spray them or if a good wash is enough.
Is washing good enough for the toys? I have parakeets in one cage and they will be chewing on the toys so I don't know if washing is sufficient . I also don't know if I should be spraying toys that birds will be chewing on.
I will wash in hot water all towels I use to cover cages at night. Should this be enough for the towels. Thank you in advance to all who respond.

Just curious: Do you spray preventive or do you know that some of them have feather mites?
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I have used Avian Insect Liquidator, and it is very safe to use directly on the birds. The directions say that the cage, perches, nestboxes should all be sprayed. If the toys are plastic, I would wash them in hot soapy water then rinse well. If the toys are wood, I would either toss them or spray them with AIL.
As far as how long the eggs can be left, the FIC says about 30 minutes, but I have had pairs that came off the nest when I was in the room for quite a while, and they still hatched out babies. Some of that depends on how warm the room is, too. The biggest problem you will have is that birds that are subjected to that much disruption are very likely to abandon altogether. If it is more important to treat for mites at this time, go ahead and treat. If it is more important to have the clutches hatch out, then I'd put off the mite treatment.
