Masked grass finch out of breath?

Post by finchbob » Sat Feb 27, 2010 2:25 pm

Recently bought a true pair of masked grass finches, one of them often has its beak open, like they do when they are panting for air when they are exhausted. The bird just seems to do it randomnly, one moment all is fine, the next moment beak is hung open like it's out of breath, then it's suddenly fine again. What could this be?

My strawberry male is the same way...stressed easily...although, personally I would ensure they don't have a problem with airsac mites. I treat with Scatt regularly..jmo

Does he do it as you approach his cage or when another bird gets near him. Birds will gape thier beaks in a defense posture.
Like back off or I'll beak you.
Could this be what you are witnessing?

Not sure, i'm about 5 feet away when he does it. I also see my societies do this a lot when i'm nest checking and I don't think it's the same thing.
